How do I submit my manuscript to the African Evaluation Journal

To submit manuscripts for possible publication in the African Evaluation Journal, kindly ensure that you have adhered to the author guidelines, as set out later in the document. Then follow the five-step submission process, as outlined here.

I have been unable to submit my work via the online submission menu. What should I do?

The journal only accepts online submissions. In your personalised journal section, you will have to select the Author link to start the submission process. If you have no Author link appearing in your user home, you will have to enable this function under your account. Under My account select the link Edit my profile and scroll down until you see the heading Roles where you will find a checkbox next to Reader, Author, Reviewer. Ensure that you have a checkbox selected next to Author and then save the page.

I tried to submit my article online, but there is no link to take me to the page to submit my article. What should I do?

The submission process is a five-step online process that starts from your personalised journal section. Try logging into the journal and in your user home proceed to the New submission link next to Author. Alternatively, click here to start the submission process. If you are not logged in, you will be prompted to log into your personalised journal section.

What must I do if I am struggling to upload manuscripts in Step 2 of the online submission process?

Large files (bigger than 15 MB) may be difficult to upload. Try to use lower quality imagery in the Word document, and upload higher quality imageries in Step 4 of the submission process.

I have registered as a user on the journal website, but I am unable to submit the article?

Are you registered as an Author? Check if you are registered as an author by ensuring you have an Author link under your user home. If you do not have an Author link you will need to enable your role as author. Under My account select the link Edit my profile  and scroll down until you see the heading Roles where you will find a checkbox next to Reader, Author, Reviewer. Ensure that you have a checkbox selected next to Author and save the page.

How do I register as an author (if I am already a reviewer)?

Please see above answer.

How do I view the reviewer comments, after formal peer review, if the Editor-in-Chief provided feedback regarding my article

The editor should send you an email stating all the revisions suggested during the formal peer review process. If you are advised to download the comments via your personalised journal section, follow these steps:

  1. Log into your personalised journal section in the African Evaluation Journal.
  2. Under your User home click on the Author or Active link that will direct you to your Active submissions table.
  3. Under the Status column, click on In Review: Revisions Required. This link takes you to the overview of the peer review process.
  4. The review page of your article provides information and documentation under the heading Peer review, and will identify files by reviewers, e.g. Reviewer B 19-123-1-RV.docx  2011-08-10. Download these documents to view the reviewer files.

The Editor-in-Chief has requested revisions to my article. How do I submit my revised version?

To resubmit your article to the journal after formal peer review, follow the above steps. Once you are in the Review page of your article, proceed to the heading Editor decision. Here the author can upload revised versions. For full instructions on the procedures related to resubmission, click here.

How many days does the review process take on average?

  • Notification within three weeks, if not accepted for further review.
  • Notification within three months, if accepted for publication, if revisions are required or if the article has been rejected by both reviewers.
  • Publication within six months after submission.

Note: editorial staff initially examines manuscripts and the editor sends the manuscripts to independent reviewers who are not informed of the identity of the author(s). When publication in the article's original form is not recommended, the reviewers' comments (without the identity of the reviewer being disclosed) may be passed to the corresponding author and may include suggested revisions. If a manuscript is not approved for publication, it will not be returned to the submitting author in any format.

I have received an email to review the copyedited version of my document. How do I download Step 1 of copyediting?

The publisher sends your accepted manuscript for language editing by a copyeditor. Once this stage is complete, you will be prompted to review the edited manuscript. To gain access to the article, you will need to log into your personalised journal section and under the Active table the status will have changed to In editing: Copyediting requested. Click on the status that will take you to the Editing page of your article. Under the heading Copyediting proceed to download the document in Step 1. This is the version that requires your attention and approval; it is also the last opportunity to make text changes to your article. Extensive text changes, e.g. large sections of text inserted or deleted from the text, are not permitted and may justify another review of the text.

How do I upload Step 2 of copyediting?

Log into your personalised journal section and access your article’s Editing’ page (see instructions above). Under the heading Copyediting in Step 2 you will have a browse and upload function. Browse on your desktop for your edited approved version and upload it. Ensure an article link is present in Step 2 and that it is the correct version that is uploaded. If you are sure that you have uploaded the correct version, inform the publisher by selecting the envelope within the same row under the Complete column. This will prompt an email that you will have to send.

I have been requested to proofread my article’s galley proofs. How do I view the proofreading instructions and gain access to my article?

Log into your personalised journal section and access your article’s Editing page (see instructions above). Select the status of your article, which will take you to the Editing page. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to Layout. You will be able to gain access to the Proofreading PDF here. The proofreading instructions are under the heading Proofreading and are labelled Proofreading instructions. To make comments for corrections, select the Page icon and paste your corrections there. Once you have posted your comments, inform the publisher by selecting the email icon under the complete column. This will prompt an email that you will have to send.
